July 31 Planning & Zoning Public Hearing

Last night’s Planning & Zoning Commission public hearing on July 31 marked the second standing-room-only meeting, highlighting the tremendous community interest in the future of Manresa.

One message was clear throughout the evening: the Norwalk community is far more united than divided on the vision for Manresa Wilds. Speakers from a variety of perspectives expressed support for restoring the site, remediating the environment, preserving open space, expanding public access to the waterfront, and creating opportunities for education and passive recreation.

The primary disagreement centered on whether the proposed permanent zoning change should be approved at this time and whether sufficient information has been provided to justify such a significant decision.

Key Questions Raised During the Hearing

• What are the long-term benefits to Norwalk of creating a regional destination?
• Who will bear the long-term costs?
• Do the anticipated public benefits outweigh the potential impacts on traffic, infrastructure, municipal services, neighborhood character, and residents’ quality of life?

Many speakers urged the Commission to carefully evaluate not only the opportunities this proposal could bring, but also the long-term obligations and costs it may create for the City of Norwalk and future generations before making a final decision.
